Sister of St. Joseph Villa Chapel
Hampton Bays, NY
The St. Joseph Villa in Hampton Bays, LI, is the summer worship retreat for the Sisters of St. Joseph of Brentwood, NY. The chapel, built in 1960, was in need of a significant facelift, with its vinyl floor, low ceiling, poor lighting, older pews, and tired-looking altar furnishings (See “Before” below). The Sisters also desired a more flexible space that could adapt to their varied worship services. Lawrence Hoy Studios was brought in to design and manage the entire scope of the project.
Lawrence Hoy Studios first opened up the low ceiling, revealing the original wood trusses. This gave the interior an expansive feel. We then created an open seating plan, replacing the pews with individual oak chairs giving the Sisters flexibility to modify the space as needed. We also painted the interior, added new oak flooring and a dimmable, energy saving LED lighting system.
Lawrence Hoy Studios also restored the chapel’s exterior. We designed a new front entrance with a peaked roof and decorative doors, and installed all new vinyl clapboard siding.
