Saint Joseph Chapel, the Catholic Memorial at Ground Zero
Lower Manhattan, New York City.
Shortly after the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, Lawrence Hoy was chosen to be the liturgical designer to redesign this chapel destroyed during the attacks. The concept for the project, as requested by the parish, was resurrection and rebirth. Lawrence Hoy’s resulting liturgical designs utilized the concept of water as an element of cleansing and rebirth, and incorporated allusions to the natural setting of the adjacent Hudson River. Liturgical art from notable artists was commissioned by Hoy. Granite and wood liturgical elements harmonize with the stone floor and wood chairs. This beautiful and profound project garnered the Optima Award from Ministry and Liturgy Magazine, a special award for liturgical design excellence.
