Millennium Mass for the Diocese of Brooklyn and Queens
Arthur Ashe Stadium, New York City
Lawrence Hoy’s challenge was to transform the Arthur Ashe tennis stadium into a “cathedral for a day” for the celebration of the Millennium Mass in the year 2000. Hoy designed the altar to be built of blocks of stone (much as the original altar was created by King Melchizidek for the first Mass in the fields), and assembled by the dancers who performed at this wondrous event. Every parish is represented by a banner, created by members of their respective congregations, using a system designed by Hoy. A monumental monstrance was designed and installed in the players’ lounge at the stadium, to be used as the focal point of the Blessed Sacrament chapel for the thousands of participants in the Millennium Mass.
