St. Finbar Roman Catholic Church
Brooklyn, NY
St. Finbar Church was drastically modified in the 1980s both architecturally and liturgically. The parish wanted to restore the church to its former glory. Lawrence Hoy Studios was commissioned to fabricate a new altar, to match as closely as possible, what was visible in the archival photographs of the original interior. An entirely new marble altar was created and capped with the only remaining pieces of the original church, the cupola and four columns that contained the tabernacle. Other elements from the original sanctuary were incorporated in a new freestanding altar. During construction, we discovered the original terrazzo floors under tile and plywood that had been installed in the 1980s. The terrazzo appeared to be unsalvageable, but the expert crafts workers from Lawrence Hoy Studios found a way to restore the beautiful decorative floor to its former brilliance. This process took many months of painstaking work, but in the end the parish can now enjoy the original beauty of the church.
